Greetings, members and interested folks!  This summer is very busy for AAHP, as I am sure it is for you!  AAHP has many different challenges, opportunities, and commitments to fulfill this summer.  I want to take a moment to tell you about what is happening right now, and why we really need your help!

AAHP expanded its endeavors in the past year.  We’ve taken on new challenges and opportunities.  We began a conservation easement program.  We received a Historic Preservation Fund grant to manage for the Friends of Nike Site Summit.  We saw some changes in our Board and administrative staff.  There is an increase in inquiries from the public, whether walk-ins at our office location, on the phone, or through email.  The media requested six interviews and published four stories about AAHP.  It’s good to be busy!  But we need your help!

This year, we have a very high demand for our 10 Most Endangered grant.  As many of you know, the fiscal 2011 federal budget proposes to eliminate both the Save America’s Treasures and Preserve America grant programs, and may cut funding for National Heritage Areas by half.  Unfortunately, full funding of the Historic Preservation Fund is also in question.  With all of these potential cuts, the demand for local preservation grants, such as the 10 Most Endangered grant, dramatically increases.  Therefore, we need your help now more than ever!

We pride ourselves on our members.  Our members come from all over the state, and the country, to support Alaska’s diverse heritage.  You’ve shown us you are concerned about Alaska’s history and culture through your words and actions.  We strive to do all we can to represent your concerns.  That is why we are still here after almost thirty years!

PLEASE, if you have not renewed your membership this year, take a moment to do so nowIf you are not yet a member, please consider becoming one today.  Our dues are inexpensive, but the impact you make on our ability to continue operation is priceless.  We also ask that you make an additional contribution to our 10 Most Endangered grant program.  With the increase in demand, we can only meet that demand through contributions from our members.  The grant is solely funded by contributions.  If we don’t receive contributions, we cannot offer grants.  I know you understand the importance of this program.  AAHP prides itself on offering what help it can to its 10 Most Endangered, but we can only do this with your help!  Please go to our membership page on this website to make your payment online, or send a check with the membership form found in this newsletter to our mailing address – P.O. Box 102205, Anchorage, Alaska 99510-2205.

You can look forward to AAHP announcing this year’s 10 Most Endangered grant recipient in November.  Also, we will hold a 10 Most Endangered grant fundraiser event in the fall, so look for your event announcement late this summer!  Again, thank you for your contribution, and enjoy the rest of your summer!
