2011 National History Day a Success! http://www.alaskahistoryday.com/
Alaska’s twenty-seven National History Day students helped make up the largest number of students to ever participate in the National History Day contest. National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis welcomed the crowd of 2,719 students from all 50 states, American Samoa, Guam, DOD Schools Puerto Rico, DOD Schools Europe, and International Schools China at the University of Maryland.
Assistant State Coordinator Ray DeTerra lead Alaska’s students on a “Day with Your Government” tour in which students met with Alaska’s Congressional delegation, toured the National Archives, Supreme Court, Capitol Building, and the White House Visitors’ Center. In addition to this students also participated in National History Day activities and attended a reception, held in their honor, at the National Museum of American History.
For the second year in a row Anchorage students Mia Keyser, Challis Debenham, and Hallie Whitmore took the Outstanding State Entry Award for the junior division for their documentary on the Alaska Pipeline. Alexander Clemens took the Outstanding State Entry Award for the senior division for his website entry on the Nixon-Kennedy Debates.
